ON Semi white LED drivers have serial-data input pin

ON Semiconductor has introduced two white LED boost drivers that feature the industry's first serial-data input pin that enables microcontrollers to control LED brightness.

The NCP5008 and NCP5009 high-efficiency boost converters operate in current-loop control mode to drive LEDs. They have an input voltage range of 2.7V to 6V, allowing them to operate directly from one-cell Li-ion or three-cell NiMH batteries. They draw a quiescent current of 3?A to extend battery life and have maximum output of 15V to drive up to four white LEDs in series.

Available in a 5-by-3mm Micro-10 package, both drivers also eliminate the need for an external sense resistor and feature a dimming function for smooth brightness changes. Local or remote control options are also supported.

The NCP5009 also features the industry-first phototransistor sense feedback pin that provides automatic adjustment of LED brightness according to ambient light. The LED current automatically decreases as the ambient light increases, thus extending battery life and ensuring a constant backlight.

Target applications for the NCP5008 and NCP5009 are the white LED backlighting circuits operating the small, color LCD screens found in most portable or wireless devices. The NCP5008 is priced at 72 cents, while the NCP5009 is priced at 80 cents per unit, both in 10,000-piece quantities.
