Fujitsu Ltd has introduced a 40Gbps LN optical modulator that has a drive voltage of 1.8V - the lowest of its kind in the world. The modulator converts the electrical data signal to an optical data stream and is a key component of an optical transmitter.

The product comes in two models: a dual-drive optical modulator that requires 1.8V drive voltage and a single-drive optical modulator with a drive voltage of 3.5V. The reduction of the drive voltages eliminates the need for custom drive amplifiers with high output voltages and wide bandwidths needed by conventional optical modulators.

It also has a built-in photodiode to eliminate the need for external optical monitoring circuit and separate input terminals for electrical data and dc bias control.
