TT Electronics tightens up resistor tolerances

TT Electronics plc's IRC Advanced Film Division has introduced a UPN series of high-precision resistor networks for applications like medical instrumentation and process control, which require ultra high-precision performance.

The parts were developed with the company's proprietary Tantalum Ultride, a tantalum nitride thin-film material that enables very tight tolerances and temperature coefficient ratios (TCRs).

IRC claims the tantalum ultride produces an ultra-stable, self-passivated resistive element that results in long-term reliability, high stability, and superior environmental performance. In addition, the company says the inherent qualities of Tantalum Ultride make it more reliable than nichrome film, a popular film material that is susceptible to degradation when exposed to moisture.

Another benefit of the new networks is the elimination of dendritic growth caused by tin in solders used in DIP and SIP, which results in reliability problems. Dendrite growth has been a problem for companies that use soldered connections, particularly in ultrastable environments, said Steve Wade, sales and marketing director for IRC's Advanced Film Division.

To eliminate the problem, IRC manufactures the UPN resistor networks without internal solder connections, using a gold-to-gold bond instead of solder to attach the leads to the resistor substrate.

The UPN resistive products offer a resistance range from 100 ohms to 100 kiloohms, depending on the package, and power ratings of 25mW to 40mW at 70C.

The new material has enabled IRC to improve several key tolerance and TCR ratings. These include absolute tolerances to 0.02 percent and ratio tolerances to 0.005 percent with absolute TCRs to 10 ppm/C and tracking TCRs to 1ppm/C.

The networks come in DIP, SIP, small-outline network and precision flat-chip-divider packages. Typical pricing for a PFC divider with a 0.01 percent tolerance is $1.45 each in quantities of 1,000. Delivery for the UPN devices is from six to eight weeks.
