Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd has announced that it will establish a new factory for the production of photovoltaic cells and modules. The factory, to be located in Osaka, Kaizuka City, Japan, is scheduled to begin mass production of HIT (heterojunction with intrinsic thin layer) photovoltaic cells and HIT photovoltaic modules in January 2004.

Sanyo currently produces photovoltaic cells at its Sumoto and Shimane Sanyo factories with a combined annual HIT production output of 30MW. The company's annual photovoltaic energy production capacity is expected to double to 60MW when the new plant goes into operation, and eventually reach 120MW in the year 2005.
