ADC eliminates need for gain amplifiers

The LTC2412 24-bit ADC from Linear Technology Corp. exhibits a noise of 800nVrms provide 22.5 effective number of bits (ENOBs) over a 2.5V and 16.9 ENOBs over a 50mV span, eliminating the need for programmable gain amplifiers.

Available in a 16-pin SSOP, the 3-wire device offers two fully differential input channels and a differential reference input. The wide input range enables it to easily handle sensor offsets and tare voltages, eliminating the need for front-end signal conditioning. This, along with the high resolution available, allows direct sensor connection for low cost, high accuracy data acquisition, the company said.

Transparent auto calibration, on every conversion, ensures stable output codes with a total unadjusted error of 3ppm independent of time, temperature, and supply. The LTC2412 operates from a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply, consumes 200?A of supply current, and automatically shuts down to 4?A between conversions.

It accepts two differential inputs, which are converted alternately without needing to be programmed. The full-scale input span is -0.5VREF to 0.5VREF where the reference voltage can be anywhere between 0.1V and VCC for flexible ratiometric and remote sensing configurations.

An on-chip oscillator provides a selectable notch filter of 50Hz or 60Hz with rejection >110dB and eliminates external components. An external clock source can be used for rejection of frequencies other than 50Hz or 60Hz and the converter will adapt automatically.

The LTC2412 is screened for industrial and commercial temperature ranges and is priced starting at $4.75 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
