Yamaha Corp. has decided to terminate its sales of CD-R/RWs for PCs and to withdraw completely from the business by the end of March.

Yamaha came to this decision since the middle speed recorder market, which the company had been targeting, has shrunk dramatically because of the high competition and rapidly falling sales prices. Additionally, the market has seen DVD-compatible devices and PC with installed CD-R/RW drives become the norm. However, Yamaha will maintain its after-sales support services for users and clients who have already purchased Yamaha CD-R/RW products.

With this most recent move, Yamaha instead has decided to focus on strengthening its existing businesses such as home theaters, home theater sound devices, and to develop new businesses using technology the company has acquired over the years. The company intends to target Japan, U.S., and Europe, followed by China, where Yamaha is set to begin full-scale operation from this fall.
