Polytronics Technology Corp. has entered into a joint development agreement with Germany-based fuse maker Wickmann. The companies have developed polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) disc protection devices for battery cells used in Benz motors.

According to Edward Chu, president of Polytronics, the company will concentrate on making PTC devices for use in mobile phones and digital still cameras. "There are four types of PTCs: surface-mount, radial leaded (RLD), axial leaded strap (ALD), and disc. The surface-mount type is designed for motherboards, notebook computers and PDAs, the RLD type is use in consumer products, while ALD and disc types are designed for battery cells," explained Chu.

The company expects demand for ALD type PTCs to increase this year, accounting for 35 to 40 percent of its sales turnover. Meanwhile, surface-mount PTCs will remain steady, taking up 50 percent of the company's sales turnover, said Polytronics.

"This year, we will introduce the HVR and HVS series of high voltage PTC devices for Motorola, Dell Cisco and Intel," added Chu.
