The CW4511 visual signal processor (ViSP) from ChipWrights Inc. is claimed to be the first programmable controller for both digital still and video camera applications that can operate at the speeds and power levels required to process full motion video on a digital still camera (DSC) format.

Available in a 256-pin BGA, the ViSP's full motion video capability includes CIF MPEG4 encode/decode at 30fps and VGA MPEG4 encode up to 15fps, as well as decode at 30fps. When encoding MPEG-4 streams at 30fps, the CW4511 typically consumes 300mW.

It also permits continuous shooting at 3fps to 4fps with a 3.3 megapixel sensor, 640x480 MJPEG encoding/decoding at 30fps, JPEG2000 encoding/decoding at >2Mpixel/s, and DVD-quality encoding/decoding.

Similar to the company's previous CW4011 product, the CW4511 is built on a 32-bit fixed-point CWv8 SIMD/vector DSP core that includes eight parallel SIMD DSPs integrated with a fast RISC serial rocessor. It can be chained together through high-speed video ports and scale to form a distributed multiprocessor system for video transcoding and digital cinema processing.

The processor also contains an on-board serial processor, as well as video sensor, LCD, NTSC/PAL video, USB, audio codec, and SDRAM and Flash memory interfaces. Other features include GPIO, timers, serial port, programmable timing interfaces, LEDs, Flash timing, and LCD backlight.

"The design point of this product was to provide the optimum balance of these attributes to make the product highly attractive to designers of digital still and video cameras, and other imaging applications," said Doug Finke, ChipWrights VP of product marketing.

Software support includes digital camera reference design pipeline and middleware libraries, Nucleus PLUS RTOS with uTRON API and Metworwerks CodeWarrior.
