Zhone Technologies Inc. has purchased NEC Eluminant Technologies Inc., a maker of last-mile access products for carriers and service providers, for an undisclosed amount. Zhone said the acquisition rounds out its line of access solutions for service providers.

Eluminant, a subsidiary of NEC USA Inc., was formed in December 1998 when NEC America reorganized its Access Products Division. Though primarily responsible for research and development, Eluminant continued to expand its wide portfolio of products, including multiplexers, digital loop carriers, as well as Sonet, broadband access, and passive optical networking products. Its primary customers are local exchange carriers.

Zhone, founded in September 1999 by senior managers of Ascend Communications, combines its intellectual property with existing solutions to create products that supply voice, video, Internet, and entertainment services to multimillion-user networks.

Eluminant marks its ninth acquisition. Previous acquisitions were Vpacket Communications and its voice-over-packet technology; Nortel Networks' AccessNode Universal Edge 9000 Product Line; Xybridge Technologies and its IP core solutions for broadband mobile networks; OptaPhone Systems for its short-haul and last-mile technology; Roundview and its Internet networking software; CAG Technologies, a seller of telecommunications subsystems and assemblies; and Premisys Communications, a developer of integrated access products.
