National Semi offers "complete" GSM, GPRS engine

The LMX388 GSM/GPRS module from National Semiconductor Corp. integrates critical analog and wireless capabilities into a single 33-by-38-by-3.6mm BGA package and is positioned as a "complete" GSM/GPRS engine for handset manufacturers.

"With this system solution for the GSM/GPRS market, National is a one-stop shop for cellphone manufacturers," said Jean-Louis Bories, EVP of National's Wireless and IA Group. "Building upon our strong portfolio in analog design, we offer everything from power management and audio technology to complete GSM/GPRS chipsets and modules to meet the needs of our customers."

The module is based on the company GSM/GPRS chipset, which consists of the LMX3413 analog power unit, the LMX3415 digital baseband, and a quad-band, low power radio.

The device boasts of features such as on-chip polyphonic ringer, speakerphone, and stereo MP3 capabilities. It also has an integrated Bluetooth Link Manager, USB, CMOS camera interface, SD/MMC interface, voice recognition, voice memo, handsfree speakerphone, MP3, EMS, and MMS in a GSM/GPRS Class B-10 product offering.

The LMX388 is available as a dual-band device but will also be offered in tri- and quad-band operation versions.
