Advanced Analogic Technologies Inc. (AnalogicTech) has announced the availability of a pair of charge pumps that drive white LEDs in TFT backlight applications in small battery-powered systems.

The AAT3113 and AAR3114 produce current levels up to 20mA for each output from a 2.75V to 5.5V input. Their high switching frequency also enables the use of four 1?F external capacitors - two charge pump flying capacitors and one each for the input and output.

The charge pumps also feature a single-wire digital interface for device enable and to set LED drive current via a 32-position logarithmic scale. The use of constant current outputs ensures uniform LED brightness. They also eliminate the need for current-limiting resistors, as well as lower EMI and noise.

A thermal management system is also included to protect against a short circuit condition on any of the output pins. Embedded soft-start circuitry prevents excessive inrush current during start-up.

The AAT3113 is available in a TSOPJW-12 package and offers four LED current source outputs, while the AAT3114 features six LED current source outputs and is available in a 4-by-4mm QFN package.
