Engineers choose 32bit MPUs/MCUs, VxWorks

Forty-six percent of embedded design engineers are using 32-bit microprocessors/microcontrollers in their designs and 55.3 percent are expected to use them in future projects, says the report, Embedded Systems Development Trends: Asia.

Based on a recently concluded survey by Gartner Dataquest and Electronic Engineering Times - Asia, the report says this growth in the use of 32bit microprocessors and microcontrollers will come primarily at the expense of 8bit architectures. The biggest shift is seen in Taiwan with 70 percent of engineers expecting to use 32bit architectures in their future design.

Gartner senior analyst Daya Nadamuni sees a strong correlation between the use of certain architectures and specific industries. The use of 32bit architectures is highest in the telecommunications/data communications sector while 8bit architectures are strongly represented in the industrial controls and instrumentation sectors followed by consumer electronics.

Sixty-six percent of respondents across Asia are using processor cores in their designs. Almost 66 percent of Chinese designers use processor cores in their designs as compared with 69 percent of Taiwanese designers and 57 percent of designers in the rest of Asia, according to Nadamuni.

"The study reveals some interesting patterns in the RTOS usage trends," said Nadamuni. "Linux, VxWorks, and Windows CE are among the more popular RTOS being used in the region. Thirty-one percent of the respondents are using VxWorks, while 21.4 percent are using Linux."

According to Nadamuni, there is also some fragmentation at the other end of the scale with a significant number of respondents using RTOS from a variety of third party vendors or proprietary, in-house RTOS. Future usage patterns indicate that 34 percent of the respondents intend using VxWorks while 29 percent plan using Linux.

The survey analysis also covers such topics as factors influencing processor and RTOS purchase decisions. More than 900 embedded systems designers from several Asian countries responded to the survey of which the majority - 73 percent - were from China, followed by 16 percent from Taiwan and 11 percent from other countries in Asia, such as India, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand.
