ON Semi PWM controller fits 42V systems

ON Semiconductor has announced the release of the NCP1560 voltage-mode PWM controller for use in 42V automotive systems, telecom power converters, high voltage power modules, and control-driven synchronous rectification power converters.

Offered in an SO-16 package, the device is claimed to enable efficient, isolated dc/dc conversion with minimal external components. It is designed with a control output for the main switch and a second output that can control a synchronous rectifier, an active clamp, or a reset switch.

In addition, the dual control outputs have adjustable overlap delays that prevent simultaneous conduction and facilitate soft switching within various circuit topologies. Its voltage mode operation with fast line feed-forward delivers better regulation than conventional devices with current mode control.

The device also features a high voltage (21.5V to 150V) start-up regulator that is disabled after initial start-up to reduce power consumption. Also included are protection features including dual mode, overcurrent protection to handle momentary overload and hard-short conditions.

The NCP1560 oscillator frequency (500kHz maximum) is selected using an external resistor. The traditional timing capacitor is incorporated internally to improve noise susceptibility and reduce external components.
