Simtek Corp., a provider of non-volatile (NV) memory and logic ICs, has received a patent related to a unique EEPROM implementation. Simtek was granted U.S. patent number 6,512,694, entitled "NAND Stack EEPROM with Random Programming Capability."

Simtek's invention uses a "dynamic program inhibit" technique designed to allow random programming within a "stack." The method also reduces the number of nodes within a stack to which high voltage must be applied, which allows the spacing between circuits to be reduced, permitting a greater density of memory cells for a given area.

This architecture is expected to allow Simtek produce future NV static RAM products with multiple NV storage bits for each static RAM cell, delivering higher bit densities while maintaining the current product's high-speed, easy-to-use SRAM interface.
