The Crolles2 Alliance - consisting of STMicroelectronics, Royal Philips Electronics, and Motorola Inc. - has opened its R&D center near Grenoble, France. The collaboration is dedicated to designing the next wave of nanoelectronics and semiconductor manufacturing on 300mm silicon wafers.

The joint R&D center will focus on specific technologies at the forefront of semiconductor R&D: baseline CMOS processing, embedded memories (static, dynamic, and magnetic RAM), SOI, analog CMOS, advanced process modules, advanced copper interconnect, low-power designs, and RF capabilities. Starting at 90nm, the alliance will further develop CMOS processes at 65nm, 45nm and, ultimately, the 32nm node.

The Crolles2 Alliance was created in 2002 when Motorola joined the existing alliance between Philips and STMicroelectronics. Semiconductor foundry TSMC also participates for process development and alignment. The main building and infrastructure of the Crolles2 Alliance facility is now in place and equipment is being installed.
