OMM Inc., the photonic switch company originally founded as Optical Micro Machines Inc., said it will close its doors and lay off all employees after failing to find new investors.

The move comes despite an effort at OMM to diversify into simpler 2D arrays of MEMS-based switches, from its original base in high-end 3D arrays.

A product manager at an optical-interface semiconductor company, who asked not to be identified, called the news "truly frightening, because OMM had real customers. If OMM had no traction, no one in the optical component industry has any traction."

OMM, based in San Diego, had attracted $150 million in venture funding since its incorporation in 1997. It has shipped more than $10 million of micromirror-based switches since 2000.

The company said it would not declare bankruptcy due to existing assets, but does not have enough orders to sustain manufacturing operations.

All 85 employees will be laid off unless a buyer is found, the company added.
