dataMate Products has introduced what it claims to be the industry's first RJ-45 SFP transceiver, allowing GbE speeds over Cat.5 UTP copper cables.

Suitable for LAN backbones and drops up to 100m, the device mates using a conventional RJ-45 interface and fits into MSA-compliant SFP equipment, thereby eliminating the need for specialized copper cable or fiber-optic cable to achieve gigabit-speed bidirectional communication.

The device operates from a single 3.3V power supply and is packaged in a die cast metal housing to protect against EMI and RFI. It also features the company's RJ-45 connector with built-in magnetic coupling circuitry and an ejector latch to facilitate disconnection of RJ-45 cable assemblies.

It is compliant with all applicable industry standards including IEEE 802.3 1000Base-T and has standard Serial ID functionality.
