Linear Tech battery charger IC provides 800mA current

The LTC4054 single-cell linear Li-ion battery charger IC from Linear Technology Corp. delivers up to 800mA of charge current without an external transistor in a 5-lead, 1mm high SOT-23 package. Alternative solutions require an integrated transistor and are housed in a package twice the size of the LTC4054, the company said.

Occupying a board area of 18mm?, the IC features on-board termination circuitry and power transistor, and requires no sense resistor, blocking diode, or charge termination control to operate.

It also incorporates thermal feedback regulation to eliminate the risk of overheating by automatically controlling the charge current to limit the die temperature during high power operation or high ambient temperature.

The LTC4054 keeps the battery "fresh" after charge termination by monitoring the battery's voltage and automatically recharging it if the voltage drops below a set threshold. The device charges the battery in constant-current/constant-voltage and terminates charging after detecting C/10. The termination event is indicated by a charge status pin, which can signal a microcontroller or drive an LED.

The battery charger operates from a 4.25V to 6.5V input source with the float voltage preset at 4.2V. It is suitable for charging Li-ion batteries from the USB port in handhelds as well as Bluetooth headsets.
