STMicroelectronics has introduced the ZipperWire VDSL chipset that delivers an aggregate data rate in excess of 100Mbps in short loops. This enables a variety of broadband services including VPNs, high quality video conferencing, and multi-channel streamed audio and video.

Designed for both central-office and CPE applications, the chipset is based on the company's Zipper-DMT technology to deliver the >100Mbps data rate. It integrates a complete frequency division duplex Discrete Multi Tone (DMT) modulation VDSL modem from the line to the ATM interface using the STLC90115 DMT processor and the STLC90114 AFE.

The chipset supports all of the international VDSL-DMT standards (ITU-T, T1e1.4, ETSI) and is compliant with the 997, 998, and Flex frequency plans. It is also compatible with ADSL, allowing operators to deploy multi-standard ADSL/VDSL equipment.

The ZipperWire chipset offers a choice of data rates from 64kbps to 100Mbps in both directions with a reach of up to 1.38km. Upstream and downstream traffic can be programmed with fine granularity for a wide range of symmetric and asymmetric combinations.
