Zarlink Semiconductor Inc. has launched a low-bandwidth, time-division multiplexed (TDM) voice communications switching platform based on 512-channel chips, each of which can replace five devices (four 256-by-256-channel TDM switches and a digital PLL).

Targets for the ZL50010, ZL50011, and ZL50012 include small- to medium-size multiservice-access platforms and Internet Protocol PBXes. The chip's data rate selection feature uses patent-pending circuit techniques that are said to reduce on-chip memory requirements and to minimize die size.

Each chip comes in a 24-by-24mm, 160-pin LQFP or a 13-by-13mm, 144-pin BGA. In quantities of 1,000, the ZL50010 is priced at $18.50 in the LQFP and $19.50 in the BGA. The ZL50011 sells for $15 or $16, respectively, and the ZL50012 for $11 or $12.
