STMicroelectronics has introduced the STi5517 STB SoC that features a higher graphics specification (RGB16) and enhanced security features, compared to the company's previously released STi5516 device.

A part of the company's OMEGA family of STB decoder solutions, the new SoC also has a 180MHz ST20 CPU, enabling faster response times and the ability to support a wider range of applications.

Audio options include MP3 decoding, Dolby Digital, Pro Logic decoding, and support for SRS TruSurround virtual surround sound. The STi5517 also includes a multi-channel DMA engine, which when used with RGB16 graphics, makes the device suitable for graphics-rich applications such as DVB-MHP, browser-based middlewares, and IPTV.

The STi5517 is pin-compatible with the STi5516, allowing customers to take advantage of the new SoC's features without hardware redesigns. Software drivers compatible with the company's STAPI specifications and all major IP blocks have also been kept software compatible. The device also supports legacy cable systems.

Furthermore, the SoC is supported by the company's OS20 RTOS and the ST20 development toolset, as well as extensive third party software support.
