NEC Corp. has expanded its PLC-based products for the WDM transmission market with the development of its colorless AWG wavelength division mux/demux and tunable dispersion modules.

The colorless AWG wavelength division mux/demux module operates in multiple wavelength sub-bands consisting of either eight or 16 channels, which are achieved by the colorless or periodic wavelength response of a single AWG. The multiple sub-band operation lightens inventories of mux/demux that formerly required separate designs to function correctly.

Designed to replace thin film filters, the module is claimed to exhibit low polarization dependent loss, low crosstalk, and low insertion loss. The device also offers a wavelength efficiency >80 percent.

NEC has also developed what it claims to be world's first tunable PLC-type compensator module, using the 15-by-2.5mm PLC chip and the company's high index contrast waveguide technology.

This module enables continuous dispersion tunability of 500ps/nm at 10Gbps and demonstrates the equalization of the waveforms of optical signals after long distance transmission via single-mode fiber-optic cable.
