The SFP-2488-LR2 series of SFP transceivers from Luminent Inc. allows customers to deliver OC-48 interfaces for applications up to a distance of 80km. The product line is claimed to meet or exceed the Telecordia GR-253 specifications for long-reach OC-48 SONET interfaces, as well as the SFP MSA requirements.

The transceivers are available with digital diagnostic performance monitoring functionality, which enables monitoring and reporting of critical module characteristics. The diagnostic function complies with the SFF-8472 standard for measurement and reporting of received optical input power, transmit power, laser bias current, voltage, and temperature.

As with other long reach SFP modules, the SFP-2488-LR2 line uses high sensitivity APDs and biasing circuitry to achieve enhanced receiver sensitivity. It also maintains a clean bit error rate of up to -3dBm input power and feature extended overload characteristics that increase the input power dynamic range by 6dB.

The modules also meet the MSA required operating current level of 300mA and are assembled using industry-standard single-board design to meet Telecordia reliability requirements for shock, vibration, and thermal cycling, as well as hot storage. Laser output includes a double-stage optical isolator to provide high immunity from optical reflections.
