A vacuum-fluorescent display (VFD) controller from Maxim Integrated Products features embedded fonts, multiplex timing control, and filament timing for flicker-free displays.

Interfacing to a microprocessor through a 400kHz, two-wire SMBus/I?C-compatible bus, the device controls a starburst numeric or alphanumeric VFD of up to 96 characters. It also supports displays of one or two characters per grid with 16-step digital brightness control.

Targeting displays with 7-, 14-, and 16-segment alphanumeric characters, the controller includes a 104-character font plus 24 user-defined characters on-chip. An internal output map works like a crosspoint switch to connect any tube-driver pin to any grid or anode.

The device, MAX6851, operates from a 2.7V to 3.6V supply in the automotive temperature range. It is available in a 16-pin QSOP (6-by-9.9mm) package. Prices start at $4.17 in quantities of 1,000 or more.
