Murata Mfg Co. Ltd has launched a surface-mountable piezoelectric buzzer for automotive applications.

Measuring 12-by-12-by-3mm, the lead-free buzzer can survive 500 thermal cycles operating in the -407C to 85C temperature range. Maximum input voltage is 25Vpp and 75dB at 4kHz, although the company said that 2kHz operation is possible with duty cycle adjustment. An external drive circuit is required.

Replacing electromechanical buzzers in automotive applications such as pushbutton audible feedback for memory seat modules, electronic HVAC systems, and two-way remote keyless entry, the piezoelectric buzzer offers several advantages over electromechanical counterparts, Murata said.

The device eliminates EMI, and is smaller and consumes less power, according to the company - typically, 1mA, compared with about 75mA for an electromechanical device.
