NEC ships 11.9-by-9.6-by-4mm SMT laser modules

NEC Compound Semiconductor Devices Ltd has announced the development of a 10Gbps directly modulated laser modules in an 11-by-9.6-by-4mm SMT package, for use in MAN and 10GbE networks.

The NX8340 series incorporates a 10Gbps uncooled, directly modulated laser diode with a built-in 5V laser driver IC and an SC receptacle to allow simple optical coupling. The devices can be mounted on a 300-pin transponder or a XENPAK, XPAK, or X2 transceiver.

They can be used as an optical source for optical transponders and transceivers that comply with standards such as STM-64 I64.1 of ITU-G.691, OC-192 SR-1 of SONET, and 10GBase-LR/LW of IEEE802.3ae 10GbE, and supports transmission up to 12km.

The 10Gbps uncooled, DFB laser diode operates without temperature control with a temperature range of 0C to 70C, allowing for a reduction in size and power consumption compared to conventional external modulated laser modules.

Other features include a monitor photodiode, a thermistor, and an optical isolator. A pigtail type interface with an SC optical connector is also provided for 300-pin transponder applications.
