Microchip NiMH battery monitor touts accuracy

Microchip Technology Inc. has introduced the PS402 battery monitor IC that integrates all the rechargeable battery monitoring functions for NiMH batteries in a single 28-pin SSOP.

The Smart Battery System (SBS)-compliant device is a fuel gauge IC that combines the company's RISC-based microcontroller with an advanced 15-bit ADC. It also incorporates the company's Accuron Technology, enabling the IC to exhibit an accuracy to within 1 percent.

Accuron Technology refers to Microchip's advanced-battery models and patented algorithms that are stored in on-chip programmable memory.

Other on-chip features include a precision time base, regulator, and temperature sensor. The time base eliminates the need for an external crystal, while the PS402 derives its power directly from the battery to eliminate the need for an external regulator. The host communication uses a compliant SBData v1.1 command set over SMBus v1.1 2-wire interface.
