The CHP2219-ML power amplifier (PA) of Celeritek Inc. uses the company's Passive-Free Technology (PFT) to eliminate the need of passive components.

Designed for use in WCDMA handsets, the 4-by-4-by-0.85mm device consists of a molded lead frame and InGaP HBT die and does away with up to seven passive components within the package. It is 30 percent thinner than conventional PAs and is also lead-free.

"PFT significantly reduces the cost of integration, lowers the overall height, improves quality through simplified construction and significantly improves the heat dissipation since the device is sitting directly on a copper leadframe," claimed Damian McCann, Celeritek's VP of Advanced Marketing and Technology.

The PA operates over the 1.92GHz to 1.98GHz frequency range and delivers a gain of 27.5dB. It also provides an output power of 27dBm and a power added efficiency >41 percent to prolong handset talk and standby times.

The CHP2219-ML is priced at $2 in quantities of 100,000.
