Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC) has decided to realign its global operations, transitioning from a business unit structure, to an organization based along functional lines. According to AMCC, this move is in response to a continued softness in its end markets.

The company intends to reduce its workforce by 31 percent by the end of the year, from 912 to about 626 employees. This realignment, combined with the consolidation of certain facilities and the previously announced closure of AMCC's wafer fab is expected to reduce ongoing operating expenses by $35 to $40 million annually, and fixed cost of sales overhead by $15 to $17 million annually. The realignment is expected to be fully completed by the end of this year.

AMCC designs, develops, manufactures, and markets silicon solutions for intelligent wide area networks. The company's system solution portfolio includes switch fabric, traffic management, network processor, framer/mapper, PHY, and PMD devices.
