Elo TouchSystems Inc. has released the AT4 series of resistive touchscreens that are targeted for integration into mobile devices such as portable medical and filed automation devices, access control terminals, and wearable computers.

Available in 6-inch, 8.4-inch, and 10.4-inch standard sizes, the devices are touted to be stable, drift-free, durable and exhibit fast response times, as well as high accuracy. They can be activated by a finger, gloved hand, or stylus and are highly resistant against dirt, dust, water, or light.

The AT4 series utilizes the company's resistive touch technology, which consists of a glass panel coated with electrically conductive and resistive layers. A polyester cover sheet is tightly suspended over the top of the glass, separated from it by small, transparent insulating dots.

During operation the controller circuit applies a voltage gradient across the resistive surfaces. The voltages at the point of contact are the analog representation of the position touched. The controller digitizes these voltages and transmits them to the computer for processing.

The controller circuit of the AT4 touchscreens consists of the 2215 serial controller board and the COACh II controller chip. The board measures 60.325-by-31.75mm and is equipped with standard SmartSet protocol and drivers.

The COAch II chip operates at both 3.3V and 5V, and occupies a footprint of 12.15-by-12.15mm. It incorporates a power-down mode in which power consumption can be reduced by as much as 95 percent.
