NTT Docomo Inc. has announced that it will work with Singapore Telecom Mobile (SingTel Mobile), one of Asia's largest wireless providers, to develop technologies for mobile multimedia services on W-CDMA 3G phones.

Docomo has already allied with several international companies to promote its I-mode service, which can be expanded to a 3G network. The collaboration with SingTel Mobile, however, will focus on new technologies such as video streaming and multipoint TV conferencing.

SingTel Mobile has been offering wireless Internet services in Singapore based on the WAP and GPRS. Since WAP is not compatible with I-mode, which is based on Compact HTML, the collaboration will focus on areas where the partners can quickly begin technology development, a Docomo spokesman said.

SingTel Mobile plans to begin 3G network services in Singapore by the end of this year.

Many operators have suspended plans to begin offering W-CDMA-based 3G services. Docomo said it expects that some providers would launch their services later this year.

"We believe this partnership will help us expand W-CDMA-based 3G mobile multimedia services in Asia," said Keiji Tachikawa, Docomo's president and CEO. "This joint initiative will enable Docomo and SingTel Mobile to offer our respective customers value-added mobile multimedia services."

Lucas Chow, CEO of SingTel Mobile, added, "The collaboration will help us take a step towards addressing some of the key concerns regarding 3G such as evolving common standards, roaming issues and compatibility of handsets."

Docomo has set a target of 320,000 subscriptions for its W-CDMA-based 3G service.
