RISC microprocessor incorporates 1MB of ROM/Flash

The TMP1962 32-bit MIPS-based RISC microprocessor from Toshiba Corp. incorporates 1MB of mask ROM or Flash memory and 40KB of RAM into a 13-by-13mm, 281-pin FBGA package.

Introduced at the 2003 Embedded Systems Conference, the device is targeted at personal portable equipment applications. The mask ROM version (TMP1962C10BXB) will be available in February 2004, while samples of the Flash memory version (TMP1962F10AXB) are scheduled to be available by the end of Q4.

The new processor is built around a TX19 core, which the company claims to enable high code efficiency and low-power operation. The core also has on-chip ROM and RAM that can be accessed in a single clock cycle.

Peripheral functions include 17 channels of 8-/16-/32-bit timers, 24 channels of ADCs, and seven channels of serial interfaces, enabling control of large-scale programs on a single chip. An on-board debug function is also available to facilitate system development.
