The LNK500 high-voltage monolithic power conversion IC from Power Integrations Inc. uses the same primary switching power supply topology as the company's LNK501 device, but features broader output current characteristics usually found in most low-end linear transformer designs.

A part of the company's LinkSwitch family of devices, the LNK500 has an output current tolerance of 25 percent, enabling it to replace older linear transformers in adapters and battery chargers.

The device uses the company's EcoSmart technology to enable a fault protected, universal input of 85Vac to 265Vac.

The LNK500P, a 3W model housed in a DIP-8 package, is priced at 31 cents each in quantities >1 million. The device is also available in an 8-pin surface-mountable package. A design accelerator kit (DKA-16A) containing two operation 2.75W universal input ac/dc adapters, product samples, and the PI Expert power supply design software, is also available.
