The MAX1582 white LED driver from Maxim Integrated Products Inc. powers up to six white LEDs in series with a constant current and provides display backlighting for two displays in cellphones, eliminating the need for ballast resistor and external switches.

The proprietary dual-segment, step-up converter includes a 30V, low drain-source on-resistance, n-channel MOSFET switch to achieve 84 percent efficiency and maximum battery life. The MAX1582 operates at constant 1MHz switching frequency, enabling the use of a low-profile inductor and a 0.1?F output capacitor.

Other features include analog or direct-digital PWM brightness control, 15mVpp input ripple, soft-start for zero inrush current, and overvoltage protection to eliminate a Zener protection diode.

The MAX1582 is available in a 12-pin thin QFN (4-by-4mm) and UCSP (2.1-by-2.1-by-0.61mm) packages, and is screened for the extended-industrial temperature range. Prices start at $2.11 (1,000-up).
