Zilog Inc. has announced the availability of the ZHX1403 Serial InfraRed (SIR) and ZHX3403 Medium InfraRed (MIR) IrDA transceivers that support the newly released Infrared Financial Messaging (IrFM) specification.

The IrFM specification utilizes existing financial services infrastructures to process wireless payment transactions at the point of sale. The infrared standard allows PDAs and cellphones to transmit confidential wireless payment information to card readers, ATMs, kiosks, gas pumps, turnstiles, and tollbooths.

A part of the UltraSlim IrDA transceiver line, both the ZHX1403 and ZHX3403 feature the company's AlwaysOn technology that keeps power consumption of the transceivers in the idle state so low that users can keep the IrDA port on their handeld or portable device active at all times with negligible impact on battery life, ZiLOG said.

They measure 7.3-by-2.8-by-1.9mm and operates from a 2.4V to 3.6V source, while drawing 6?A in idle mode. The ZHX1403 has a 1m link distance and is designed for use in PDAs, Internet appliances, handheld computers, and medical electronics. The ZHX3403 is specifically designed to support MIR data transfer rates in mobile phones, pagers, PDAs and similar products. It is among the smallest transceiver on the market to offer the full 1.15Mbps data rates specified for 20cm and 30cm links by the IrDA's IrMC standard.
