TDK Electronics Corp. announced the availability of its Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Ultrium 2 cartridges that provides a larger data storage capacity and faster data transfer speeds than previous generation LTO Ultrium products.

The 105.4-by-102-by-21.5mm device offers a capacity of 400GB (2:1 compression) or 200GB (uncompressed) and supports data rates of 80Mbps (compressed) or 40MBps (uncompressed). The cartridges also employ a proprietary unified mechanism that enables total hardware compatibility with a variety of drives.

To assure maximum data integrity, the cartridges feature a specially developed, proprietary Super Finavinx metal particle magnetic tape formulation designed for ultra high data storage and low error rates. The tape utilizes TDK's Three Dimensional Compound binder system to yield high magnetic particle packing density and resistance to particle shedding.

These properties enable the cartridges to have stable output characteristics and assure low error rates even under the stresses of rapid tape speeds, as well as repeated R/W cycles. The LTO Ultrium 2 cartridges are also capable of withstanding >25,000 loads/unloads.
