The AK4121 master-clock-free asynchronous sample rate converter of Asahi Kasei Microsystems (AKM) Co. Ltd is designed to support the various sampling rates of next-generation DVD recorders, DTV receivers, and automobile A/V applications.

Available as a 24-pin VSOP device, the two-channel 20-bit device offers a dynamic range of 117dB and an output frequency of 96kHz. A built-in PLL eliminates the need to provide an external master clock since the internal operations are based on the data clock and also does away with unwanted master-clock radiation.

When video or audio is recorded from a digital video camera or CD player to a digital recording device such as a DVD recorder via the DV port or digital-audio interface, recording is made after the sample-rate is converted from 32kHz, 44.1kHz, or 48kHz to an asynchronous sampling rate for the DVD recorder. The AK4121 enables this conversion requirement.
