The BroadGear series of media processors from Hitachi Ltd adds a video processing engine to the VLIW and SIMD architecture of the CPU core, enabling them to process up to 55 billion operations per second (370MHz) - double the performance of the company's existing product.

Aside from a VLIW CPU core, the device integrates the co-processors and peripheral interfaces required to support the MPEG-2, MPEG-4, JPEG2000, NTSC/PAL, IEC958, and MP2 formats. Multimedia functions are delivered by application software rather than dedicated hardware, providing flexibility and reducing the number of parts in the chip.
