Boosting its ability to bring its FPGA synthesis tools into the marketplace, AccelChip Inc. has announced the closing of a second round of venture funding for $6.6 million. The company offers AccelFPGA - claimed to be the only EDA tool that synthesizes Matlab - a language widely used by DSP developers.

AccelFPGA, introduced in 2002, produces synthesizable RTL models and simulation test benches from Matlab descriptions. AccelChip has been shipping Matlab since last fall and claims to have customers in the defense, communications, transportation, and consumer electronics industries.

AccelChip will use its new capital to expand its product development group, which is located in Lake Oswego, Oregon, and is headed by CTO and synthesis expert Michael Bohm. The funds will also be used to develop a marketing organization, establish a consulting services group and expand an international sales force that's under the direction of Rick Carlson, former VP of sales at Synplicity.

The latest funding round was led by InterWest Partners, with participation from Greylock Partners, Xilinx, Arch Development Partners, and several private investors.
