PrintDreams Europe AB has announced the development of the OptoNav, which the company touts to be the world's most accurate optical navigation sensor, generating an error less than the diameter of a human hair.

Designed for use in the company's sensor-based printers, the high accuracy makes it possible to achieve printouts where misalignments caused by random hand movements are almost invisible to the human eye.

The sensor is based on several advanced algorithms running in a powerful DSP. The image input is created by a proprietary optical system that includes lenses, a light source, and an off-the-shelf CMOS camera from Agilent Technologies.
