Sharp Corp. has chosen MIPS Technologies Inc.'s 32-bit 4KS core family for development of next-generation microcontrollers (MCUs) targeting secure data applications. Under the terms of the agreement, Sharp will combine its 1MB Flash memory with MIPS' 32-bit cores - specifically the 4KSc and 4KSd.

MIPS' 4KS cores implement the patented SmartMIPS microarchitecture, featuring cryptography enhancements that are expected to bring a higher level of smart card processing security through special instructions designed for efficient cryptography processing. These integrated cryptography enhancements reduce the die size and power consumption while increasing cryptographic processing performance, eliminating the need for a co-processor and reducing overall chip cost.
