Microchip expands fan-speed control, fault detection line

Microchip Technology Inc. has expanded its TC64xB fan-speed control and fan-fault detection line with the addition of enhanced system offerings.

The TC642B and TC647B enable the user to set a minimum fan speed threshold, while the TC646B, TC648B, and TC649B can be set with an auto-shutdown threshold to control fan operation when the operating temperature falls to lower-than-expected levels.

The devices detect when a fan locks up and launches an alert signal to the host processor that enables the user to replace the fan unit in time or shut down the system.

The TC64xB family utilizes an external power unit that allows the devices to drive 5-, 12-, 24-, and 48V fans rated up to 1A. They have an operating voltage range of 3V to 5.5V, and a temperature range of -400C to 850C.

Available in 8-pin MSOP, SOIC, and PDIP packages, the TC647B, TC648B, and TC649B devices are priced at $1.06 and the TC642B and TC646B offerings go at $1.12. All are available in 1,000-piece quantities.
