Zagros closes switch fabric operation

Zagros Networks Inc., a semiconductor startup positioned in the "second wave" of switching-fabric architectures, closed operations in mid-May.

The closure came under the assumption that the public networking business was still several quarters from revival. Wade Appelman, VP of sales and marketing at Zagros and a former executive with SiTera Inc. and Cabletron Systems Inc., said employees were given severance pay and unsecured debts were paid to the extent possible.

"There was no bankruptcy filing of any type," Appelman said.

Zagros raised $6.7 million in first-round funding, and had a commitment for an additional $10 million in funding. When the funding milestone analysis was conducted in the spring, company founders and the board of directors concluded that the business plan would not be met, and that operations should be halted.

Appelman said he and a handful of executives are continuing to look for purchasers of some of Zagros' intellectual property, which includes a proprietary "rate-aware" switch IC architecture called Z1.

But the opportunities for startups in area such as switching fabrics and network processors continues to be brutal, Appelman said, adding that he expected several more companies to follow the Zagros path soon.
