Samsung Telecommunications America, a supplier of Metropolitan Area Network solutions and a U.S. subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd, has selected Xilinx Inc.'s Virtex-II Pro FPGAs to be used in the development of its next-generation IP switch/router products.

Xilinx's reconfigurable PLD-based architecture can be repaired or upgraded with new features, even after installation in the field. With this, Samsung hopes to come up with a platform capable of adapting to rapidly changing standards as they emerge.

This approach is expected to offer significant cost savings to Samsung customers by eliminating the need for service calls, or on-site repairs.
