Worldwide laser system revenue on the rise

The worldwide market for laser systems experienced a recouping of revenues last year despite the lackluster performance of the telecommunication and metal fabrication industries. In a recent study by Frost & Sullivan for the World Laser System markets, the overall growth for laser systems in 2002 was pegged at 3.9 percent.

The market research firm predicts the total market will grow at a cumulative growth rate of 6.2 percent over the forecast period up to 2009, during which this industry is forecast to reach revenues of $6.4 billion from 2002 levels of $4.2 billion. The market segments in this study included CO2 lasers, solid-state lasers, diode lasers, and others such as helium neon, helium cadmium, dye, excimer, ion, and metal vapor lasers.

Several factors have contributed to the recouping of revenues: the increasing use of solid-state lasers in marking, cutting and welding applications; renewed demand in diode lasers for optical storage; and the emerging use of lasers in medical device manufacturing, laboratory sciences, and DNA array scanning.

Last year, diode-laser systems constituted 49.4 percent of the largest segment of the world laser systems market. While the telecommunication sector has seen very little capacity additions, the data communications sector has witnessed improved fortunes. Capacity additions in the metro haul, access level, enterprise networks, and storage area networks have helped sustain demand for diode laser systems. Optical storage and recording applications also showed dramatic growth due to the proliferation of CD-R/W and DVD technology.

In applications for metalworking, the trend is shifting toward the use of solid-state lasers instead of CO2 lasers because of their efficiency and their advantage of beam delivery through fiber.
