The OXmPCI954 quad UART PCI interface chip from Oxford Semiconductor handles serial data rates up to 15Mbps in asynchronous mode and 60Mbps in synchronous mode. It integrates four UART channels, a 3.3V PCI interface, and a local bus/IEEE1284 port in a 160 LQFP package.

The product is a single chip solution for 3.3V PCI- and Mini PCI-based serial and parallel add-in cards. Function 0 offers the quad UART capability. Function 1 provides either an 8-bit local bus or a bidirectional IEEE1284 parallel port supporting SPP, EPP, and ECP protocols.

Each UART channel is software compatible with industry standard 16C550 devices and the company's OX16C950 UART family. Expansion cards with more than four channels are also possible using the device's 8-bit pass-through local bus option.

Equipped with 128B deep transmitter and receiver FIFOs, the chip is able to reduce CPU overhead and boost add-in card performance. It supports Windows (98 and above), with Linux drivers available from third party sources. PCI card reference design and utilities for configuration upgrade are also available.

The PCI interface chip is priced at $11.68 in 1,000-piece quantities.
