Stratos fiber-optic connectors target high-level apps

Stratos Lightwave Inc. announced they have developed the PHD backplane and panel-mount fiber-optic connectors that are based on 1.25mm LC ceramic ferrules. These multi-fiber connector products are suitable for optical backplanes, switches, cross connects, or flex circuits, as well as for high-performance parallel processing systems.

The PHD backplane connector is compatible with optical flex circuitry, and is designed for blind-mate environments where ribbon-style fiber optic cable is used. It is an alternative to MT-type interconnects - providing the same density, but offering easier maintenance and servicing.

A total of 5mm xy-axis "float" and 4mm z-axis "float" absorbs dimensional tolerance stack-up, facilitating blind-mating operations. These backplane connectors are available with a straight or right-angle cable exit, and can be parallel stacked to provide 32 channels. It is available in single mode, tuned single mode, multimode, and a mix of single-mode/multimode configurations.

Typical insertion loss is 0.14dB for standard single-mode versions, 0.09dB for tuned single-mode version, and 0.15dB for multimode versions. Return losses run at 55dB, 56dB, and 42dB, respectively.

The PHD panel mount connector provides from 4 to 64 individual channels in the same size as a standard D-subminiature connector. The all-metal connector incorporates an integrated metallic shutter which not only reduces optical hazards, but also helps to maintain a clean optical cavity.

Prices depend on the fiber type, number of optical pathways, and termination assembly.
