STMicroelectronics has announced the availability of the ST50160, an asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) gateway processor and reference design that combines bridge and LAN router functionality in a single chip designed to decrease customer time-to-market.

The product allows integrators to build low-cost residential gateways with the ability to support various product features that meet new LAN and WAN interfaces such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, ADSL, and Voice-over-IP.

The chip is built around an ARM 946ES RISC processor that embeds a complete ADSL transceiver and multiple LAN interfaces, allowing multiple network mediums to be used. The data traffic can be routed through a number of bridging methods - LAN to Wireless LAN, Ethernet to USB, or Wireless LAN to USB.

The ST50160 chip, together with its development platform, software, and modem reference design, is available in the market.
