PMC-Sierra Inc. has announced two RM9000x2GL highly integrated 1GHz 64-bit MIPS-based multiprocessors that offer customers additional I/O interface options such as 3 ports of 10/100/1000 Ethernet MAC, Generic Packet Interfaces (GPI), and PCI or HyperTransport.

The RM9220 and RM9224 multiprocessors can be used in various applications such as enterprise routers and switches, network protocol processing and conversion servers, storage systems, DSLAMs and Web servers. The dual-core devices can also be used as a high-performance and compact solution for VPN/ Firewall and other security applications in conjunction with appropriate encryption engines.

Integrating a high-speed memory and I/O interfaces, the products create low latency accesses into the main memory and high bandwidth to the I/O devices. The I/O interfaces include three Ethernet MACs, PCI or HyperTransport, DDR SDRAM controller, SysAD, and a local boot bus. The three Ethernet MAC interfaces each operate in 10-, 100-, and 1,000Mbps and support industry standard MII, GMII, and TBI interfaces to standard Ethernet transceivers.

An integrated 32-bit PCI controller provides PCI 2.1 compliant operation at both 33MHz and 66MHz, while an 8-bit HyperTransport interface can operate up to 500MHz DDR. A 200MHz integrated DDR SDRAM interface provides 25.6Gbps of memory bandwidth, and the local boot bus provides connectivity to lower speed devices such as boot ROM and Flash.

Both processors are designed using the 0.13?m CMOS process and can achieve a power of 12W in a typical networking application with all I/O running at maximum frequency. The RM9220 is offered in a 672 FCBGA package, while the RM9224 is offered in a 896 FCBGA package. Pricing for both processors range from $379 to $389 in 10K quantities.
