MPEG video IC market poised for further growth

According to In-Stat/MDR, the MPEG IC market reached over 180 million units and $1.3 billion in revenues last year. By 2007, this industry is expected to achieve 344 million in units and $2.8 billion in revenues.

In-Stat says that for the fourth year in a row, ST Microelectronics was the largest supplier of MPEG ICs, based on revenue, with 31 percent. ESS has again reportedly held the top spot for total MPEG units with 28 percent. ST Micro came in second in total units in 2002, while ESS was second in revenue. LSI Logic was third in both categories.

In-Stat reports that DVD MPEG ICs accounted for largest part of MPEG IC shipments in 2002 at 80 million units.

The MPEG-4 IC market, which was only of interest for mobile handsets a year ago, is being looked at for online networks and published media due to the standardization of MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC, otherwise known as H.264. H.264. Service providers are also seen to be eager for H.264 and there is interest from DVD and PVR manufacturers as well, In-Stat says.
